Do I need permission to prune or remove a tree?

What is a Tree Preservation Order?
A Tree Preservation Order is a legal protection placed on an individual tree, group of trees or woodland by a local planning authority. In most cases, permission is required before pruning, cutting down or carrying out other work on a protected tree.
Can you work on trees in a conservation area?
Yes, subject to the necessary local-authority notification or approval. Most tree work in a conservation area requires written notice before work begins, although certain exemptions may apply. We can check the requirements and manage the application on your behalf.
What is the difference between tree pruning and tree removal?
Tree pruning selectively removes branches to improve a tree’s health, safety, clearance or shape. Tree removal involves dismantling or felling the entire tree and is normally recommended only when justified by its condition, location, safety or the client’s approved plans.
What is crown reduction?
Crown reduction reduces the height or spread of a tree’s canopy while retaining a balanced, natural shape. It may be recommended where a tree has outgrown its available space, requires clearance or needs carefully managed weight reduction.
What is crown thinning?
Crown thinning selectively removes smaller branches throughout the canopy. This can reduce canopy density and allow more light and air through the tree without substantially changing its overall height or shape.
What is crown lifting?
Crown lifting removes or shortens lower branches to increase clearance beneath a tree. It can improve access over roads, driveways, paths, gardens or buildings while retaining the main canopy.
Can you remove a tree safely in a confined space?
Yes. Where conventional felling is unsuitable, a qualified tree surgeon can dismantle the tree in controlled sections using specialist climbing, rigging and lowering equipment. The safest method will be selected following a site and risk assessment.
Do you remove branches and waste after completing the work?

Do you offer stump grinding?
Yes. Stump grinding removes a stump to below ground level, helping reclaim the area and reducing trip hazards and unwanted regrowth. The required depth will depend on how the space will be used afterwards.
When is the best time of year to prune a tree?
The best time depends on the tree species, its condition and the reason for pruning. Some trees respond best to work during dormancy, while others should be pruned at a particular time to reduce the risk of disease or excessive sap loss. We assess each tree before recommending work.
